When influencer Brooklyn Buckley travels to Big Bend National Park, she thinks it will be business as usual: take cute photos, see a new place, and get out. After going to the wrong party and taking the wrong drug, she finds herself lost in the desert. After reaching the Mexican border, she enters a world of strange rituals, nights spent sleeping under the stars, and unrelenting violence; a world that she is surprisingly well-suited for.

With a new identity, new friends, and a new purpose, Brooklyn can't escape the feeling that some fundamental part of her is missing. They tell her it's a side effect of the drug, but she fears something about her has changed forever. After the bloodshed is over and the monsters of the West are buried, will she still recognize the person she sees in the mirror?

The Problem With Noah Kahan

My memory of Noah Kahan is friends of mine being excited about him a few years ago. Finally, they said--someone is making pop music about the place we're from. My extended social media circle was buzzing about the prospect. No more would artists from Nashville and LA come down from on high to rap about being the cheer captain on the bleachers, or having Julio get the stretch--they would rap about what it was like to grow up in New Hampshire. I didn't think about it much at the time.

What is the correct amount of Venice?

Venice has a problem: everyone wants to visit. The islands making up the city are frequented by 60,000 visitors a day on average, with up to 120,000 visitors a day on peak. Given the relative small size of the island, this has posed obvious quality of life issues for residents, including but not limited to gentrification. Venice residents have responded in kind: in the last 50 years, the population of just the main island of Venice has dropped from 175,000 permanent residents to 50,000. What is to be done?
